Coaching Selection Process
2010/2011 Season

Guidelines & Procedures

Any person wishing to be the Head Coach or Assistant coach of any SBAA team from U6-U18 must review and complete the entire coaching selection process form prior to the deadline.

All applicants will need to submit an Application Form (see page 3) before the designated deadline for the coaching season.

Coaches will be appointed by the Coaching Selection Committee who will comprise of members of the Executive and the technical development staff.

The appointed head coaches are responsible for appointing their team manager, assistant coach and female representative on or before September 1 of the current season.

Applications are to be returned to the SBAA Technical Director, Don Tupper, by one of the following methods:

Coach Selection Policy

  • 1.Application submitted by deadline: February 1, 2010
  • 2.Interviews will be conducted for all applications.
  • 3.Select (Metro/Gold) coaches may be required to provide other documentation to assist in the application process (ie. Training session plans, team goals, tentative calendar for the team)
  • 4.The length of term for each assignment will be 1 year. Coaches will need to re-apply on annual basis.
  • 5.Coaches are restricted to coaching a maximum of two teams and a maximum of one select team (unless otherwise approved by the Executive and/or Technical Director.
  • 6.Coaches will strictly adhere to the policies, procedures and philosophies outlined in the SBAA Constitution and the Technical Department.

Dates to Remember

  • 1.The application process will begin on January 4, 2010
  • 2.The application deadline is February 1, 2010
  • 3.Team coaching appointments will be made March 1, 2010.
  • 4.Evaluation Camps & Team Selection: April –May, 2010

Coaching Application Criteria
Coaches will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Level of Certification (see Certification Standards)
  • Coaching Experience (soccer-related)
  • Coaching Philosophy
  • Relevant coaching and playing background (both in or out of sport)
  • Commitment to coaching development and education
  • Commitment to SBAA’s Coaching Development Series
  • Support and commitment to overall Club Development Program and Player Development Philosophy
  • Willingness to support SBAA’s Development Program
  • Participation within the SBAA Team Selection Process
  • Commitment to follow an age-appropriate Club Development Program
  • Commitment to attend monthly coaches meetings (and/or have one team representative present)
  • Willingness to sign the SBAA Codes of Conduct
  • Surrey Breakers offers a wide variety of development and training programs. SBAA endorses club initiated programs and therefore any outside organizations is to be approved by the Surrey Breakers’ Executive and its Technical Director

Coaching Certification Standards

In our efforts to provide the highest level of coaching to our members, Surrey Breakers encourage all coaches to further their coaching certifications. SBAA will reimburse the course fee upon completion of certification; however, this is not to exceed $250.00 per person per calendar year. Travel accommodations and personal expenses will not be reimbursed. Receipt and proof of certification must be provided to the Treasurer.

Below is a list of Surrey Breakers minimum coaching standards for each age group. These standards are in accordance with British Columbia Soccer Association’s Coaching Certification Pathway. All head coaches are strongly encouraged to complete the following BCSA levels of certification within 12 months of accepting their coaching assignment:
